Nellis Air Force Base

Nellis Air Force Base (NAFB) is a United States Air Force installation located in southern Nevada, approximately 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Las Vegas. It is a major center for advanced combat training, aerial tactics development, and weapons testing, and it is closely associated with the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) and Area 51 operations.

History

Established in 1941 as Las Vegas Army Airfield, the base served as a training facility during World War II.
Renamed Nellis Air Force Base in 1950 in honor of Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas native killed in combat during the Battle of the Bulge.
Throughout the Cold War, Nellis became a hub for tactical fighter training, weapons development, and testing new aircraft.

Mission and Operations

Nellis AFB supports multiple missions critical to the U.S. Air Force:

Advanced air combat training through programs like Red Flag exercises.
Weapons testing and development, including simulation of realistic combat environments.
Maintenance and operation of aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F-22 Raptor.
Hosting of specialized squadrons, including aggressor units that simulate enemy tactics.

Facilities

Extensive ranges, including parts of the Nevada Test and Training Range for live-fire and simulated exercises.
Airfield with multiple runways capable of supporting a variety of fighter and support aircraft.
Advanced simulation and training centers for pilots, intelligence officers, and weapons crews.

Relationship with Area 51

Nellis Air Force Base plays a key role in coordinating airspace and support operations for Area 51 and adjacent restricted zones:

Provides logistical and air traffic support for testing conducted in Dreamland (Area 51).
Conducts exercises near restricted zones, contributing to reports of unusual aerial phenomena in the region.
